A number of leaders have contacted BB Headquarters for advice on what to do and how to support young people who are struggling with their mental health and emotional wellbeing. Leaders have also been worried about young people who have, or they suspect have been self-harming.
We are currently updating the Safeguarding Procedures and within that there will be some additional guidance for leaders.

There is lots of information online from national organisations for young people, their parents/ carers, and adults who are working with children and young people.
Where a young person tells you they are self-harming, or you suspect they are, it is important that you inform their parents/carers. However, if you think this will put the young person at more risk, please contact the BBHQ Safeguarding Manager. In an emergency situation consider contacting out of hours social services, police and/or medical professionals.
Remember: If you have concerns about a young person’s emotional wellbeing that makes you think they could be a risk to themselves this should be dealt with and reported as a safeguarding matter. This could include self-harming behaviour, suicidal thoughts and other serious mental health concerns.
There are occasions where leaders may use their private vehicles to transport children and young people to BB events and activities. There are a number of things to be aware of to ensure this is done safely.
New guidance has been developed to support leaders, which can be found here.
Children and young people may happily attend weekly meetings but a residential can be daunting and may present additional issues to overcome. For children and young people who are anxious about being away from home, or those with any additional support or medical needs, it’s essential that leaders meet with parents/ carers and gather as much information as possible. This will also help determine whether an individual risk assessment is required.
Each Company is responsible for keeping a record of any accidents/incidents which occur during BB activities, including residentials and any activity that has been provided by a third party. Always ensure these matters are reported to your Captain, and make a written record including who was involved, what has happened, where, when and any action taken.
Remember: If someone (young person/leader/other person) requires professional medical attention at the time of or as a result of an accident sustained whilst participating in a BB activity the Accident Notification Form must be completed.

This themed programme for the Company age group was developed as part of a collaboration with The Children’s Society and we have had amazing feedback from leaders. Young people really enjoyed the sessions which were very informative, and this has also raised awareness for them and leaders on this type of harm.
